'It Could Have Been Me' by Anonymous

In this story, we learn of the storyteller’s near miss with being subjected to female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and her sense of shame upon learning this. The storyteller goes on to speak of her dawning awareness of the problem after watching a documentary about the practice. She ends by raising a series of poignant questions about why FGM/C continues as a form of patriarchal oppression, in spite of efforts to condemn it.

This story was created in a workshop led by StoryCenter, in collaboration with Sahiyo, and Threads for Wellbeing, and funded by the Wallace Global Foundation.
