A more gender-balanced world? IWD2019

How will you celebrate women's achievements on Friday March 8, while calling for a more gender-balanced world?  #BalanceforBetter #IWD2019

Shabnam Fareed, Program Officer-Training|AQAL Project- JICA believes Gender equity means fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their respective needs. Being a professional woman, I feel privileged that I am being treated equally to my opposite gender. I stand as a woman and giving my best in the field of teacher’s education. I believe I am doing my part in bringing a better balance in society. Are you?

In my culture, having a daughter is still considered an unenviable position. Even among the educated elite, and the professional elite, you can find undertones of this ugly preconception. I had to listen to those condescending lectures personally when my baby girl was born. I was chagrined, to say the least.

Unlike those self-righteous well-wishers, I don’t consider my baby girl a burden, or a curse, or even a “ticket to heaven”. To me, she is a complete new person. A person that my wife and I are responsible for. A person that we have to ensure becomes a kind and logical member of the society of tomorrow. And that is why I have vowed to devote every iota of my energy to making sure that Romana grows up with the best of all experiences.

In the picture, I have Romana in a baby carrier, strapped to myself. I think that pretty much sums up my personal role for her. I am the rocket and she’s the astronaut. It is my job to make sure that she goes “TO INFINITY, AND BEYOND!”, to quote Buzz Lightyear. I do believe that that is the role of all parents: As unshakable support systems for their children, to make sure that they achieve whatever they want to believe. Ali Sajid Imami
