All the news we hear about refugees these days may seem like it's coming from a world away, but some of the most famous women the world we all know and love were once in positions where they were forced to flee their homelands. Here are 12 amazing women who were refugees once upon a time:

Alek Wek, model and fashion designer arrived in Britain in 1991 from Sudan.

Iman, supermodel moved to the U.S. from Somalia in 1975.

Regina Spektor, singer, songwriter, and pianist moved to the U.S. from Moscow in 1989.

Gloria Estefan, singer, songwriter, and actress moved to the U.S. from Cuba in 1959.

M.I.A., singer, moved from Sri Lanka to the U.K. in 1984.
